Hi 👋 from Cocoa

Hey Reader,

Hello from Cocoa Beach, where Kelly and I are enjoying this view from the porch:

Thanks to a sales pitch on a rainy vacation day, my Dad decided investing in a timeshare back in the early 2000s was a good idea.

(Despite popular opinion, it’s worked out great for us!)

We’ve been coming here twice a year ever since.

But this time something’s different.

The place we stay has a boardwalk to the beach through a natural preserve of palms, grass and sand dunes. I love the view across a green space with the ocean behind.

However, what we thought was a tree covered in dark birds when we arrived yesterday was actually bare branches and dead leaves left over from that record-breaking freeze we had back in February. 🥶

I can see signs of it on many of the plants around here, similar to the plants at home – an ever-present reminder the planet is changing.

As a 90’s kid, I grew up with PSAs instructing me to recycle, turn off the lights, and cut the plastic rings from a 6-pack of Diet Coke so sea turtles wouldn’t die.

I miss a time when public policy was largely on board with doing the collective work to turn around climate change.

But instead, I now feel like my efforts are at odds with the powers that be.

And yet, I remain hopeful that my efforts alone still matter.

I’d like to think that I have one of this week’s sayings to thank for it.

In the latest episode of Being Different Together, Kelly and I continue on our Intentionality series.

🎧Listen to #18 - Intentionality, Part 3: If You Think You Can Change the World, You Have a Better Chance

We explore:

  • How to tell the difference between grounded, realistic hope and fantasy “manifestation”
  • A wild pirate parable that reframes karma, intention, and “doing the least harm” in impossible situations.
  • How trying to change anything—yourself, a relationship, or the world—inevitably brings conflict, and why that’s often what helps us evolve.
  • And more!

And listen, I get it. There are so many things to worry about in this world and it’s all merited.

I’m never saying we ignore or excuse it. BUT, when there’s a perspective that can make dealing with and changing it easier to grasp, I say let’s bring it on.

May this episode inspire you to do something to make the world better for you and those around you.

In Joy,
Nyssa

A few weeks ago we went to our vacation spot -- Cocoa Beach -- for our biannual trip. (I've written about that more here.) I feel like Kelly and I have gotten into a nice groove with this place. We always stay at the same resort and at this point we've got our favorite places to visit. This trip we got big into doing jigsaw puzzles, check out this beautiful one we completed: Yes, that tested both my botanical and geographical knowledge! But then two days before leaving I started to realize...

Hey Reader, It's been a minute. If you're new here, I usually send this newsletter once a week. But apparently I've taken an accidental sabbatical. I shared a few months ago that we're renovating our house ... while still living in it. At this point I'd say I don't recommend it. 😫 So we've spent the past few months shuffling our belongings from room to room, trying to make space for the work while also going to work, taking care of ourselves and our animals, and generally keeping life moving....

Every time I sit down to write this email, I face the same thing: The voice in my head that tells me I don't have anything worth saying. Or worse, that what I have to say is not worth saying. I'm sharing this because I want to normalize the battle with the Inner Critic. ⚔️ (And I'm guessing this sounds familiar to you, too.) In the latest episode of Being Different Together, Kelly and I discuss the next two sayings from Uncle Murray's canon, both of which point to a way through one of the...
