Lots of practice!

"Nyssa, I feel like I haven't seen you in forever."

The yoga teacher at my home studio came over to hug me.

She hadn’t seen me because it’s been months since I’ve come for regular practice.

I joked that now I’ll come almost daily for about 2 weeks before I don't come again for months.

She gave me a knowing laugh.

"We all do that," she confessed. "That's the practice."

We talk about our yoga practice, meditation practice, writing practice, or our fill-in-the-blank practice, like it's about the actual thing we're doing.

But it's not. It's about how we work with ourselves through the process.

When we do something that makes us grow an element of resistance will rise up.

"You don't have time for that."

"You're tired."

-or the worst-

"You're no good at this."

Remember, Reader, the practice isn't the activity, it's working through the resistance, despite it.

Two books that have taught me a lot on this are:

đź“–The Practice by Seth Godin

đź“–The War of Art by Steven Pressfield

What’s something that’s giving you lots of practice these days?

Don’t let that inner critic run the show. 🙅🏻‍♀️

You have too much to offer to let it stop you. đź’ť

Every summer, one of my relatives inevitably says: “Happy Chindependence Day.” It goes back to 2008. The early days of YouTube, when my roommate and I discovered chin face—that absurd thing where you draw a face on your chin, cover your eyes with a towel, and record it upside-down. Most of my dad’s siblings were visiting for the fourth of July. Twenty-four-year-old me thought it would be hilarious to do a full improv monologue from the perspective of a chin who had declared independence from...

They say a lotus grows from mud. I’ve seen vines grow from concrete. Yesterday, I spotted one pushing up through the crack between my house and our not-even-two-year-old porch slab. Nature is amazing. So are you, Reader. Some of the biggest lessons come from what feels dry, brittle, and stuck—yet somehow, new life breaks through. This time of year, I like to reflect on the past six months and dig up the gems hiding in the rough. Here’s what I’ve learned: I need routine—but one that breathes....

A friend asked me yesterday, "How are you treating yourself right now?" I'm embarrassed to say that I really had to think about it. The first few things that came to mind were all work-related. Don't get me wrong, I love my job. But I don't think those count as treats. Then I remembered that I had a fascial booked today. While booking my next appointment with the esthetician, I took advantage of the bowl of chocolates set out. This morning, I gave myself an extra 5 minutes to slow down and...
